Nylon, scientifically known as polyamide fiber, is a type of synthetic fiber; it has characteristics such as high strength, good abrasion resistance, good resilience, and good wrinkle resistance, making it a choice for down jackets and mountaineering clothing. Depending on the molecular structure, nylon can be divided into nylon 6, nylon 66, nylon 11, nylon 610, etc.; according to different fiber lengths, nylon is divided into nylon filament and nylon staple fiber; nylon can also be classified by use into civilian nylon and industrial nylon.
Nylon Classification
1. Nylon production is steadily increasing.
Nylon has excellent performance and wide applications, with production steadily increasing. According to the report published by the Research Report Network titled 'In-depth Research and Investment Strategy Report on the Current Status of China's Nylon Industry (2022-2029)', from 2017 to 2021, China's nylon production increased from 3.3292 million tons to 4.15 million tons, with an average annual compound growth rate of 5.66%. In the future, as outdoor sports, fitness, and yoga become more popular, the demand for related sports equipment made from nylon fabric will continue to increase, driving the development of the nylon industry.
In terms of the proportion of nylon production to the total chemical fiber production, it maintains an overall share of about 6%; while the global nylon share is about 9%, there is still significant room for improvement in China's nylon production. In 2021, the domestic nylon production accounted for 6.36% of the chemical fiber production, a decrease of 0.41 percentage points compared to 2017.
Specifically, in terms of the composition of domestic chemical fiber production in 2021, polyester is undoubtedly the leading chemical fiber product, with a market share of 82.2%; nylon is the second largest chemical fiber, accounting for 6.4%; followed by viscose fiber at 6.2%.
2. Low market penetration of nylon 66.
Nylon 66 is an important variety of nylon, which has advantages such as high strength, high abrasion resistance, high cold resistance, and high ignition point compared to nylon 6, and performs strongly in civilian, industrial, and military fields. With the release of downstream demand for clothing, military supplies, and other end products, the nylon 66 market will burst with vitality.

However, the production of nylon 66 in China is limited by excessive reliance on overseas supply of upstream raw material adiponitrile. As of 2021, the production was only 390,000 tons, accounting for 9.4% of total nylon production. Currently, the market penetration of nylon 66 in China is relatively low, and if the domestic production rate of adiponitrile continues to increase, nylon 66 will enter a rapid development phase.
As of the end of February 2022, among the nylon enterprises in production, only Taihua New Materials has a production capacity for civilian nylon 66, with a production of 40,000 tons; other companies such as Shenda Co., Ltd. and Huafeng Group produce industrial nylon, which is relatively less technically challenging than civilian nylon.
As of the end of February 2022, the distribution of nylon 66 production capacity in China.
From the perspective of downstream application fields of nylon 66, engineering plastics are a major consumer market, accounting for 49%; which is further subdivided into engineering plastics for automotive, electronics, and rail transit, accounting for 23%, 14%, and 12% respectively. Industrial yarn and civilian yarn are the other two major application markets for nylon 66, with proportions of 34% and 13% respectively. (PY)
